Your passport is truly a powerful document that requires protection now more then ever before. Identity theft is a constant danger, and the last thing anyone wants is his or her name attached to gun-running or international fraud. More importantly, your passport is the most effective proof that you are, in fact, you. A passport makes life very easy, but a stolen passport can make life very, very hard. So take care in how you carry around and store your passport so that no one can swipe it while you're shopping for souvenirs or admiring the landscape.

Note: U.S. Citizens traveling to and returning directly from a U.S. territory or island state are not considered to have left the U.S. territory and do not need to present a passport. These include:

Hawaii
American Samoa
Guam
Northern Mariana Islands
Puerto Rico
Swains Island
U.S. Virgin Islands

Passports are definitive proof of citizenship of a particular nationality. Your Passport is the single most important document you can have for Travel anywhere in the world. For some countries a Visa will not be necessary in order to Travel to them, but for most it will be required. It is now necessary by law that you have a Passport to prove your citizenship if you plan to Travel anywhere outside of the United States or your country of residence. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requires all international travelers, even those bound only for Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda to present a passport.
Your U.S. Passport will help you in the case of emergency or if you are in need of assistance outside of the United States. A Birth Certificate, voter registration card, or drivers license are no longer valid ID for international Travel. Before you travel, always be sure to have a photocopy of your Passport accessible by e-mail in case your Passport becomes lost or stolen while you are abroad.
Also keep in mind that many countries, including China, Brazil, Russia, and India require that your passport be valid 6 months beyond your travel date.
