Azerbaijan Fun Facts

Did you know Azerbaijan has the largest concentration of mud volcanoes in the world?

Azerbaijan is home to approximately four hundred of the thousand mud volcanoes that are known to exist on Earth. Of these four hundred, two happen to be the largest mud volcanoes in the world – Boyuk Khanizadagh and Turaghai.

Mud volcanoes, also known as “sedimentary volcanoes”, can have a maximum diameter of around 10 kilometers and a maximum height of 700 meters. As opposed to usual volcanoes that spew lava, mud volcanoes are normally very cold usually just near freezing. In 2001, Azerbaijan experienced an eruption of a mud volcano which was almost 300 m and spewed tons of mud surrounded by dense, black smoke. The eruption was reported to be visible from about 10 miles away.
