Benin Fun Facts

Did you know that the capital city of Benin, Porto Novo, was originally developed during the 16th century as a port for the slave trade?

Porto Novo is an inlet in the Gulf of Guinea infamous for its role as a slave port. It gained its current name from the Portuguese who were the established slave merchants. Benin is also home to Route d’Esclaves (Slave Route), a 2.5-mile stretch of coast that was the last piece of African soil slaves stepped on before being transported to the Caribbean. The last reported ship to transport slaves left the present day Benin for Brazil in 1885.

Porto Novo has various museums where you can visit and learn about African ancestry and history, the slave trade in Africa and the post-slavery return of the Afro-Brazilians.
